CANACONA
In the first mishap, an SUV car and a truck were involved in a collision late Thursday evening on the NH66, disrupting traffic for over four hours and prompting authorities to divert traffic along the Agonda-Khola route.
The second mishap took place at about 6.30 am on Friday when a truck rammed into a roadside tree, partially blocking traffic during the day.
According to sources, a loaded inter-state truck travelling from Margao towards Karwar was negotiating a slope, when the vehicle strayed and hit a roadside tree a few metres before the Bhumipurush temple at Gulem.
The driver escaped with minor bruises but had a lucky escape as the truck came to a halt after hitting the tree and narrowly avoided falling down the gorge.
The truck, however, blocked one side of the highway and though the incident occurred at about 6.30 am, there was no sign of either Canacona police or Traffic Police till about 10 am.
While light vehicles could pass on the other side, traffic came to a standstill every time a heavy vehicle passed by the ill-fated truck.
A Traffic Police team which was penalising violators at the entrance of the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass barely a kilometre away, finally turned up at the site and began to regulate traffic, much to the relief of motorists.
Traffic safety cones were placed to caution motorists of the accident site, while two traffic policemen stood guard to regulate the traffic.
