Goa is once again grappling with the deadly problem of drunken and reckless driving as yet another life was lost in a fatal accident on the Mandovi Bridge. Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Kumar did not mince words as he acknowledged the growing menace of drunken driving as a “cat-and-mouse game” between motorists and the police.
“The information on the presence of traffic police at a certain point spreads like wildfire," Kumar said, reacting to the swift exchange of information which allows violating drivers to avoid checkpoints, often by taking alternate routes to evade the law.
The Mandovi Bridge accident is just the latest in a series of serious collisions in Goa that have raised alarms about the need for stronger, more consistent enforcement of traffic laws.
DGP Kumar said they are enforcing the option of strengthening the present approach of thin weekend nakabandis by selecting certain urban and coastal areas for placing a greater number of nakas to curb the menace of drunken driving.
“We have to analyze, assess, and control this menace,” he asserted, indicating a shift towards a zero-tolerance policy in each area of the State.
Urban and coastal areas, known for their bustling nightlife and heavy tourist traffic, have been identified as hotspots for drunken driving incidents. Kumar conceded that there is more possibility of accidents due to drunken driving in these areas. “We must look into it and curb the menace,” he reiterated.
In response to criticisms that traffic enforcement drives are often short-lived, DGP assured that the upcoming crackdown would be different. “No, the drives won't be short-lived anymore. We will continue the drive and also expand during the weekdays regularly. We are serious about tackling the issue head-on,” he added.
The DGP also acknowledged the complexities of the problem stating that it extends beyond just enforcement, He claimed it's a long exercise, yet they are moving in the right direction.
“I am not saying an immediate response will be seen but if we can analyze well and execute remedial measures properly, then the positive outcome will certainly emerge after some time," he stated. The DGP has meanwhile ordered each Traffic Cell to prepare a comprehensive road safety plan.
