Traffic flow improved at Cortalim, authorities appeal for discipline

Chief Minister’s Manohar Parrikar’s instructions to officials to resolve the traffic mess along the Agassaim-Cortalim stretch of the highway had an immediate effect, as authorities quickly patched the craters and potholes before hotmixing the road on Friday night.

Having improved the stretch of road, authorities have now appealed to motorists to maintain traffic discipline. According to reports, authorities worked overtime on Friday night by getting the workers to fill all potholes and hotmixing the stretch of the road before dawn.

The results were evident and traffic flowed smoothly on Saturday, in sharp contrast to the huge traffic jams along the same route which had left motorists stranded for several hours earlier this week.

Traffic Police Inspector Roy Pereira on Saturday appealed to motorists to maintain lane discipline while driving along the stretch of the highway.

“The hotmixing of the road has prevented waterlogging in the area. Additional forces have also been deployed to prevent overtaking of vehicles. Traffic jams can be avoided if motorists maintain lane discipline and support the efforts of the traffic police,” said PI Pereira.

“We are stationed the entire day in the hot sun to help people and people must cooperate with us, especially when there is a minor accident or breakdown. We attend to such cases, but motorists begin overtaking on all sides and cause further chaos.”

“If traffic moves in a single line, it will move slowly but smoothly. However, if lane discipline is not maintained, the double and triple vehicle lines will only end up in traffic chaos,” PI Pereira added.

Sources in the Traffic Cell informed that due to severe traffic congestion, police had also stopped fining motorists for traffic violations at the Cortalim circle, as vehicles when stopped could have further aggravated the traffic jams.
