Traffic Sentinel Scheme to be reviewed

PANAJI:
The much-cursed and criticised Traffic Sentinel Scheme will be reviewed by a panel headed by the Transport Secretary as assured in the Goa legislative assembly during the budget session, Transport Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavlikar announced on Thursday.
Dhavlikar said, the composition of the panel will be finalised and the order issued in the next few days, adding that it would go into all issues raised by MLAs during the discussion on the scheme including intrusion on citizens' privacy, misuse of photographs and videos, besides sentinels using the scheme to give vent to personal enmity.
Dhavlikar said most of the criticism against the scheme was unfounded and the review panel will go into the aspects of its implementation. It will come up with recommendations to fine tune its implementation, he said.
Dhavlikar also said that the scheme had begun to show results as two-wheeler riders were now mostly using helmets. He attributed the change in mindset among motorists to the traffic sentinel scheme.
Coincidentally, Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander who introduced the scheme in Goa and was its chief protagonist in the face of severe criticism from the public as well as the political class, will be relinquishing charge as Goa's police chief today.
