Passengers at the Curchorem bus stand may soon find buses with the new “Curchorem” name boards, instead of the traditional “Sanvordem” name board.

Following persistent demands from the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC), buses plying from Curchorem bus stand is likely to drop the existing “Sanvordem” name board in favour of the “Curchorem” name boards.

“The resolution has been approved and we will send an intimation to the KTC. Once we receive a reply from them, changes will be implemented immediately,” Quepem's Assistant Director of Transport Rajesh Naik told The Goan.

In one of its meetings, the CCMC had unanimously resolved to ask the Quepem RTO office to allow buses plying from Curchorem bus stand to use the name “Curchorem”, instead of “Sanvordem” on its name board.

“'Curchorem' should be known by its own name and not by some other name and the transport department should have taken the initiative to implement the resolution,” said Councillor Felix Fernandes, who is also president of Curchorem-Sanguem-Margao Route Bus Owners Association.

“This resolution was unanimously adopted and forwarded to the assistant director of transport at Quepem, but nothing has happened till date. During the last council meeting, I had raised the issue and inquired to know the status of the resolution.”

“People of Goa and elsewhere should know the clear difference between Curchorem and Sanvordem, as these two places are different constituencies and separate entities. Curchorem is a town and governed by municipal council, while Sanvordem is a village across river which is in Sanvordem constituency,” informed Fernandes.

When contacted, CCMC Chairperson Vishwas Sawant Dessai said the resolution was sent to the assistant director of transport at Quepem, assistant director of transport (South) at Fatorda and Director of Transport at Panaji, but they are yet to receive any reply.

“The resolution was forwarded to all authorities concerned on February 2 and the government authorities should immediately implement our demand,” said Dessai.

Speaking to The Goan, Quepem Assistant Director of Transport Rajesh Naik said the issue was raised at a Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting on July 15, which was attended by Deputy Collector (South), who is the chairman of this body, the assistant director of transport as the member secretary and other members.

“During the meeting, the issue was discussed and was approved. Now, what is remaining is to intimate the KTC about this resolution and new changes which will be applicable to them equally.”

“We will send an intimation letter and a resolution copy to the KTC. Once we get a reply from them, we will immediately implement the changes in the new name boards for buses at Curchorem bus stand,” added Naik.
