Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will inaugurate the newly constructed Amona-Virdi bridge on January 26 and the bridge is expected to reduce the distance between Sakhali and Panaji by over 10 kms.
Speaking to The Goan, Speaker and Sankhali MLA Dr Pramod Sawant said the bridge should have been completed a long time ago, but work was delayed due to land dispute and objection filed by some landowners. “However, these issues have been resolved and the bridge is ready for inauguration,” said Dr Sawant.
“There was long pending demand from locals to have this bridge, to reduce the distance between Sakhali and Panaji by 10 kms. At present, people have to travel from Cudnem and Navelim to Marcela, but after this bridge is inaugurated, locals from Sakhali can directly visit Marcela instead of going via Cudnem and Navelim,” said Dr Sawant.
Stating that the bridge has been constructed by GSIDC at a cost of Rs 27 crore, Dr Sawant said that Sankhali constituency is developing fast with more projects planned in the area.
“Work on the Karapur bridge will also been taken up shortly. Since the road from Amona-Virdi is narrow, steps will be taken to widen this road on priority. The proposal regarding the Chorao-Salvador do Mundo bridge is in the final stage and work will be taken up as soon as an NOC is received to this project,” Dr Sawant added.
Meanwhile, Navelim Sarpanch Manali Gawas has expressed happiness over the completion of the Amona-Virdi bridge and expressed her gratitude to local MLA Dr Pramod Sawant and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
“This bridge will definitely play a key role in developing many villages like Sakhali, Virdi, Amona and also Marcela,” said Gawas.
