Strange it may seem, but true that though the authorities had identified 104 dangerous trees along the National Highway -66 in the year 2022 for trimming or cutting, the cotton tree which had come crashing down at Navelim claiming the life of a lady rider, surprisingly does not figure in the list.
When The Goan asked Additional Collector-II Dipak Desai to shed light on the cotton tree at Navelim after its branch had resulted in a fatality last month, he has confirmed that the tree does not find mention in the tree list. “Why the cotton tree did not find a mention in the list I do not know. But, one should understand that the exercise to identify trees is a difficult one. Then there is the question of trees owned by private parties. In most cases, the exercise to trim or cut trees in private ownership ends in dispute,” he said.
