The Goa Police’s Crime Investigation Department’s (CID) Crime Branch on Sunday arrested tribal leader Ramkrishna Jalmi for his speech at Saturday’s rally at Benaulim against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in which a journalist-complainant has alleged he abused mythical Hindu god Parshuram.
Jalmi was arrested after multiple complaints including one at the Colva police station filed by journalist Gaurang Malkarnekar who alleged that at the anti-CAA rally at Benaulim on Saturday evening, Jhalmi referred to Parshuram as a terrorist who did not create the land of Goa as is generally claimed, adding that the myth only usurped the lands developed by farmers.
Jalmi is alleged to have claimed in his speech that Parshuram harassed the natives of the land, the complaints against Jalmi have alleged. Besides Malkarnekar’s complaint at Colva PS, several others were also filed against Jhalmi at multiple police stations across the State accusing him of hurting religious sentiments.
At the meeting, Jalmi had argued in favour of adopting just norms in law making in favour of tribals, fisher folk, and forest dwellers, saying the tribals are determined to challenge CAA because it is will deprive them of land -- their only access to livelihood.
The anti-CAA rally was organised by People’s Forum for Justice, Secularism and Democracy formed by the Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), the social arm of the Goa Catholic Church in collaboration with the Goa unit of the National Confedration of Human Rights Organisations and Concerned Citizens of Goa.
