Truck carrying liquor gutted in fire at Dhargal

A truck carrying liquor was gutted in a fire on the national highway near the Dhargal-Colvale bridge on Tuesday morning.

According to sources, the container proceeding towards Pernem was carrying a large quantity of liquor when the cabin of vehicle suddenly caught fire on National Highway 66 after crossing the Colvale-Dhargal bridge.

The driver escaped from the vehicle which was engulfed in flames and fled from the site.

Fire tenders from the fire stations at Pernem and Mapusa went to the site and extinguished the fire. All documents in the cabin were destroyed in the fire, making it difficult to ascertain the details of the liquor consignment.

Officials from the transport and excise departments later visited the site and conducted investigations into the vehicle and consignment.

When contacted, Pedne Police Inspector Sachin Lokre said the consignment contained a mix of different brands of liquor.
