Luckily, no major injuries were reported and only a two-wheeler rider was injured in the incident who was shifted to the GMC for medical treatment. It took more than an hour to clear the vehicles piled up and open the road for traffic again.
Though the Old Goa Police could not provide the exact details about the accident, a driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident informed The Goan that the truck (UP-21-AN-3604) travelling towards Ponda lost control on reaching the rumblers and first hit an Innova vehicle shoving it aside, which resulted in the Innova dashing against a two-wheeler (Unicorn) which was in front of it.
“The truck then went on to hit vehicles coming from the opposite side, a Maruti Alto, Volkswagen, a Baleno, while also hitting other vehicles -- a Swift and a Honda City,” the driver informed while adding that the truck came to a halt only after finally hitting another truck right in front of the Hat Khatro Khambo.
Another driver said if the other truck was not hit, then more vehicles would have been damaged.
Meanwhile, the accident has once against brought into focus the dangers posed at the Hat Khatro Khambo junction, where roads from four different sides join the bypass road.
“The four-lane bypass road suddenly narrows down at the junction and over-speeding vehicles like trucks and lorries find it difficult to slow down, resulting in accidents,” a driver informed while stating that a solution needs to be urgently worked out before fatal accidents occur.
