In a shocking incident, a 68-year-old retired GMC nurse and her elder sister were found brutally murdered in an apartment in the Kamat Residency behind Saraswat Bank at Ponda on Saturday morning.
The double murder has shocked people in and around Ponda taluka and Goa Police has begun intensive investigations to identify and nab the accused.
According to sources, Mangala Kamat (76) and her sister Jeevan Kamat (68) had been residing on the first floor of Kamat Residency building since the past 20 years.
Mangala’s elder son, Pritesh, had been staying along with his wife and their daughter on the second floor of the same building, while her younger son stayed at an ancestral house in Marcaim. Other relatives of the family reside at Dhavali.
As part of his routine, Pritesh would hand over milk to his mother and aunt every morning, but when he went to deliver milk on Saturday, he found the door open. Pritesh then entered the house and found his mother and aunt lying dead on the floor in a pool of blood in the kitchen. He then alerted other relatives and the police were notified of the double murder.
The Ponda police swung into action and began investigations in and around the house, while also deploying fingerprint experts and police sniffer dogs into service.
They have found a koita at the site and suspect it to be the weapon which was used in the murder of the sisters.
South Goa SP Pankaj Kumar Singh and Ponda DySP Nelson Albuquerque visited the site in the afternoon to take stock and to supervise police investigations.
When contacted, both Singh and Albuquerque refused to comment into the ongoing investigations.
Sources said Jeevan Kamat was a retired GMC nurse and both sisters had owned considerable property and there are suspicions that property issues may have been the motive for the double murder.
