Two groups of fruit sellers clash in Mapusa, 3 held

MAPUSA

Mapusa police has arrested 3 persons after a fight broke out between two groups of fruit sellers at the Mapusa sub yard, following a dispute regarding space at the Mapusa market on Wednesday.

The dispute took place after the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) had decided to revert to the pre-Covid days and allow normal functioning of the municipal market.

However, two groups of fruit sellers, the Hakim-Narangi group and Darugar group, had asked the MMC to give them the same space near Salgaonkar Pharmacy alley, but the MMC refused and gave them space in front of each other.

The Hakim group had objection to this decision and kept their business shut for two days and a delegation had even visited Mapusa MLA Joshua D'Souza on Tuesday, but D’Souza chose to stay firm with the MMC’s decision.

On Wednesday, both groups organised a meeting in the market sub yard to resolve the issue where one group accused the other group of being responsible for the situation.

The argument turned into a brawl among the two groups.

Four persons form the Hakim-Narangi group were injured in the clashes and they were treated in the District Hospital.

Acting on a police complaint by Samiulla Hakim, Mapusa police booked an offence against four persons and arrested three of them. Salim Darugar, Haider Darugar and Rajaballi Darugar under Sections Sections 504, 341, 324 and 506 IPC. Mapusa PSI Viraj Korgaonkar is investigating the case.
