It was a tragic Tuesday for two youth who drowned in quarries in separate incidents at Curdi and Cansaulim.
In the first incident, a 16-year-old boy from Shantinagar-Vasco drowned in a laterite stone quarry filled with water in a remote area of Cansaulim on Tuesday morning.
According to sources, Anil Shankar Chawan, a student of Std 11 commerce, had gone to the laterite quarry at Cuelim-Cansaulim for a swim along with two other boys, who were also students of the same higher secondary school.
"It is not clear whether the trio were classmates and whether they had gone to the higher secondary school before they left to the quarry for a swim. The three students went to the quarry in the morning and Chawan began struggling in the water, even as the two other students present at the location tried to help him,” said the source.
“The two other students made frantic attempts to ask for assistance and even called their friends and finally a local diver Anand Lamani from Mangor reached the site and fished out the body from the water. The Verna police and an ambulance reached the site but the boy had already died by then," said the source.
The diver Anand Lamani said water in the quarry was very deep.
"I got a call at around 11.45 am and rushed to the site on receiving the news. I later called the police and they reached the site. The police then asked me to recover the body and I dived in the water to fish out the body,” said Lamani.
“There were two more people at the site and I realised that all three persons did not know to swim. The deceased had been inside the waters for around 20 minutes when I reached the quarry. The water is deep and I had a great difficulty to locate the body.”
“Youngsters must avoid such places in the monsoon because these kind of unknown water bodies are very dangerous and people don't have any idea of the depth of the waters and the presence of any obstacles that can entangle them during a swim," said Lamani.
Verna police carried out the inquest panchanama and shifted the body to Hospicio hospital for a post mortem. They later handed over the body to the family after the post mortem and registered a case of unnatural death.

INCIDENT AT CURDI
Barely two days after the drowning of two persons at Netravali-Sanguem, a youth from Curpem-Curdi drowned in a quarry on Tuesday evening.
Sources informed that Sarvesh Tulshidas Wadekar (21) of Curpem-Curdi had reportedly left his house at around 6.30 pm citing personal reasons.
However, as he failed to return home, family members began searching for him. They found his mobile and slippers at a nearby mining pit.
Presuming that he may have drowned, a frantic search was conducted in the quarry and the Sanguem PSI Ramchandra Naik was also camping at the site. The body was later retrieved at 9.40 pm after intense efforts by the locals.
