Uday Madkaikar is set to be the new Mayor of Panaji and Pascoela Mascharenhas his deputy. Both Madkaikar and Mascarenhas are from the panel backed by former Taleigao MLA, Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate.
The BJP panel had earlier decided to give their opponents a walkover by not fielding any candidate for the mayor and deputy mayor’s posts.
Goa Forward Party leader Babush Monserrate, meanwhile, thanked BJP leader Sidharth Kuncoliencar for the smooth election adding, “We will work for Panaji together.”
We were in the majority but it is good if everyone supports development, added Monserrate.
BJP leader Sidharth Kuncoliencar on Wednesday morning announced that the BJP-supported panel will not field a candidate for the two posts.
Of the 30 corporators in the CCP, 17corporators owe their alleigance to Monserrate. The BJP has 13.
The formal announcement of the unanimous election of the mayor and deputy mayor will be made on Thursday.
