Buses continue to make unauthorised stops at the Old Market Circle, raising concerns among citizens and elected representatives about the enforcement efforts of the RTO.

Despite being an unauthorised stop, buses heading towards Margao city and South Goa still pick up passengers at the Old Market Circle, even though the transport department has not designated it as a bus stop.

When the circle was widened and fitted with traffic signals, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai had directed the RTO and Margao Traffic Cell to take strict action against buses stopping there illegally. However, the situation remains unchanged.

The lack of enforcement by the RTO and Traffic Cell has allowed the problem to persist. Although the RTO has claimed to have penalised some bus owners and drivers, Margao Municipal Councillor Vitorino Tavares has pointed out that buses continue to make long stops at the Old Market Circle.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Tavares criticised the authorities for failing to take effective action. “This has only encouraged more buses to stop here, causing traffic congestion at the city’s entrance,” he said.

Tavares has called for strict action against bus owners and drivers to put an end to unauthorised halts at the Old Market Circle.
