The Santa Cruz panchayat demolished an unauthorised temporary structure at the 20-point programme locality near the GMC in Bambolim on Monday.
The demolition was undertaken by the panchayat upon the complaint of Smita Shahapurkar.
Later speaking to reporters, Sarpanch Jennifer Oliveira informed that the panchayat will continue to act against illegalities if the same is brought to their notice by the locals.
“We are not going to tolerate any illegalities in the village,” she reiterated.
Deputy Sarpanch Domnic Pereira informed that the panchayat will initiate action only if a complaint is lodged with the panchayat.
When questioned by The Goan whether the panchayat would not take suo-motu action against illegalities, Pereira said, “If we take suo-motu action, then 80% structures in Santa Cruz would have to be demolished. Therefore, we will act on illegalities which are causing hindrance to the public.”
“In this instance, the person who had forcibly occupied the structure was creating trouble to the complainant and hence we decided to act promptly after completing all the legal formalities,” Pereira stated.
