The Margao Municipal Council is bracing up to crack a whip on the operators of rent a bike which are found parked around the Margao Municipal building and other public places occupying public parking space.
Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has informed that the Council will soon write a letter to the RTO as well as the Margao Traffic cell to initiate action against the rent a bikes parked around the Municipal building and in public places.
This follows a report received by the Chief Officer from the Municipal engineer Diniz D’Mello on Monday. The Municipal engineer was asked to carry out a study on the presence of rent a bikes around the Municipal building as well as in the adjoining areas near the Communidade square.
The issue over parking of the rent-a-bikes had figured at the Margao Municipal Council meeting after it was raised by Councilor Mahesh Amonkar, who had drawn attention of the Civic chief Lyndon Pereira, demanding immediately action against the operators.
Mahesh and other Councilors had contended that the parking of rent-a-bikes around the MMC garden is denying parking facilities for the general public as the operators parking their two-wheelers in the wee hours of the day.
The City Fathers had demanded action against the two-wheelers by pointing out that the rent-a-bike business operators are mandated to function from their place of business or from their residence.
Mahesh told The Goan that he has on Monday demanded to know from the Chief Officer and the Municipal Engineer the steps initiated to stop the rent-a-bikes from parking around the municipal building. “My only issue is that the rent-a-bike vehicles parked around the Municipal building is denying parking amenities to the members of the public. We cannot allow this to happen right under the nose of the Municipal body”, he said.
The Chief Officer said the Civic body would write to the RTO as well as the Traffic police to initiate action against unauthorized parking by the rent-a-bikes.
