PANAJI
Residents of old buildings in the State capital will now be formally allotted one parking slot per house number, city Mayor Rohit Monserrate said on Monday.
Monserrate also said that the Goa State Urban Development Authority (GSUDA) was expected to conduct a comprehensive mapping of the drainage network in Panaji to rid the city of the constant flooding it suffers during the monsoon season.
"People had an issue about parking, especially residents of Panaji, who live in old buildings who do not have a parking facility for themselves. We are going to allot them one parking (slot) per house number," Monserrate said, adding that those staying on rent and shopkeepers will not be able to avail the facility.
"It’s only for people who are living in Panaji who do not have parking (place) for themselves. That we have decided. One person from CCP (Corporation of the City of Panaji) side one person from the agency, will go around and do a survey and then we will sit down again and award the parking," Monserrate said. The announcement comes after the CCP received complaints by city residents, about the lack of parking for owners of homes in old buildings which were not designed for car parking.
The mayor also said that the CCP was examining a proposal from the GSUDA to carry out a comprehensive mapping of the city's drainage network to keep floods at bay.
"We feel it is very important. Our city floods all the time. So until we find a permanent solution to this, this is just going to keep happening. So we are hoping that once this proposal goes through and they give us a comprehensive plan, then we can go to different departments to ask for funding to finally rectify the issue," Monserrate also said.
