A food preparation unit engaged in supplying food to major trains, including Rajdhani, located at Rawanfond-Margao was found operating under unhygienic conditions and sans FSSAI registration.
The unit has since been directed to close down the operation with immediate effect.
This came to light during an inspection by a team of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Wednesday.
Incidentally, the FDA officials informed that the same unit was inspected earlier and food business operators were directed to comply with the hygienic norms.
However, when the unit reopened on Wednesday, they were found operational under the same unhygienic conditions. The FBOs have been directed to close operation and a case will also be filed against the owners for flouting the hygiene norms.
GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins said the unit will not be allowed to reopen till they comply with the conditions imposed by the FDA.
“We are disturbed by the situation. The railways need to take cognizance of the caterers and catering companies and the sub-contractors and the base stations where the food is prepared,” he said.
Martins made an fervent plea to the other food contractors to apply for food licenses to ensure they are not operating in unhealthy and unhygienic conditions.
