MARGAO As curtains are set to come down on the fishing season by May end, calls have been made to the authorities to conduct an inspection of the Cutbona fishing jetty to address the sanitation issues at the State’s biggest fishing hub.
In letters addressed to the Health Officer Primary Health Centre, Balli and Director Fisheries about sanitation issues, GOACAN has expressed concern about the sanitation issues prevalent at the Cutbona fishing jetty and sought the intervention of the officials from the Health and Fisheries Department.
In a letter to Dr Benedita Dias, Health Officer, Primary Health Centre, Balli, GOACAN has pointed out that all is not well at the newly inaugurated jetty with encroachments, unauthorised storage and unhygienic conditions prevalent.
The letter stated “It may be recalled that in September 2024 and August 2025 similar issues had arisen and at the request of GOACAN, your PHC after a site inspection had issued directions to the Directorate of Fisheries and steps were taken to improve the sanitation situation at the Cutbona jetty. Therefore it is very important that your PHC undertakes a site inspection before the monsoons set in, so as to take stock of the health and sanitation issues at the fishing jetty.”
In a separate letter to Dr Shamila Monteiro, Director Fisheries, GOACAN has also called for an inspection of the jetty. The letter states “after the necessary inspection to take stock of the sanitation issues at the fishing jetty, your office needs to ensure that a SOP is implemented by the Jetty Management Committee (JMC).
