Police yet to determine identity and cause of death
MAPUSA
A decomposed body of an unidentified person was discovered in a nullah near the new bus stand in Mapusa, opposite the Carvalho petrol pump, on Sunday morning.
The grim find has sparked an investigation by the Mapusa Police to determine the identity and cause of death.
Local residents noticed a foul smell and alerted authorities after spotting what looked like a body in the water channel.
Police arrived at the location, cordoned off the area, carried out a panchanama and later removed the body for post-mortem examination.
At this stage, police say the deceased has not been identified. “We are investigating all possibilities. We have started by collecting fingerprints, checking missing persons’ reports and talking to nearby residents. The post-mortem report should give us more clues about how long the body has been here and the cause of death,” said a senior officer from Mapusa Police.
Authorities are examining whether any foul play was involved or if the person may have died of natural causes and the body later drifted or was swept into the nullah.
So far, there is no indication of identity or nationality. Mapusa Police are investigating further.
