Sonsodo road witnessed an uproar on Tuesday evening after the unseasonal showers rendered the road unmotorable due to the slippery conditions, causing accidents.
In fact, a number of two-wheeler riders met with accidents, along the stretch of the Margao-Curtorim road at Sonsodo, right from the Sonsodo waste dumping site to the Chowgule college junction. The Margao Fire brigade was called to undertake the clean-up operation as the leachate and slurry turned the road slippery.
With no sign of any officials at the site at the initial stages, citizens lent a helping hand to the motorists to either stop travelling on the road or take precautionary measures.
The Fire brigade and the traffic police made their presence felt at the site after citizens called up for help and assistance.
Fire Officer Gill D’Souza told the media that the fire brigade requisitioned the services of a fire tender from Verna since a sizeable portion of the road from Sonsodo to Chowgule college junction was hit by leachate and slurry.
With news of the Sonsodo road turning slippery resulting in accidents spread in the Curtorim, opposition leaders rushed to the site.
Congress leader Moreno Rebello slammed Curtorim Independent MLA Reginaldo Lourenco for making tall claims over the development in Curtorim. “The Curtorim MLA should explain to the people whether the leachate and slurry flowing on the Sonsodo road is development. Or he is only working for himself or not bothered about the people”, he said
Saying the garbage issue has been pending for a long time now, Moreno demanded to know how many more years will it take for the government to resolve the Sonsodo mess. “What has happened on the Sosnodo road is happening every year. This only goes to show that the issue is not resolved yet”, he said.
Aam Aadmi Party leader Roque Mascarenhas said dozens of two-wheelers have met with accidents on the Sonsodo road because of the slippery conditions caused by leachate and slurry. “I called up the district Collector to inform the authorities about the danger posed by the Sonsodo road to the road users and to make a plea to clean up the entire road and to either stop or divert traffic from plying on the road”, Roque said.
Meanwhile, fire brigade rushed to Fatorda as well as Colva following reports that the roads have turned slippery after the showers, causing accidents.
Margao Municipal Sanitary Chairman, Councillor Camilo Barretto squarely blamed the Civic body for the slippery condition of the Sonsodo road on Tuesday.
Barretto, who rushed to Sonsodo after hearing the news of the road accidents, told the media that he had been insisting on the Margao Municipal authorities to install leachate collection tanks at the garbage compactors, but in vain.
