Social media has been a boon to many. But for a widow, a friendship on a social networking site turned into a disaster.
A 70-year-old widow from Cunchelim-Mapusa got friendly with the accused, a 35-year-old from Haryana on Facebook about two months back, Mapusa police sources informed The Goan.
The friendship “blossomed” to a full blown affair with the accused also promising to marry the widow.
The accused then came down to Goa around three days ago with tickets sponsored by the besotted widow.
The widow had lost her husband and a son some years back and was apparently staying at home along with her daughter-in-law. She and the daughter-in-law made a living by giving rooms on rent in her home.
The widow made arrangements for her “boyfriend’s” stay in one of the rooms, which she used to let. For the last three days, she apparently went out with the accused showing him around the place in her Nano car, police said.
On Monday, the widow became tipsy and had a fall in her house. Taking advantage of her fall, the accused took her mobile phone and the keys of the Nano car and fled from the place.
After some time, when the widow regained her composure, she realized that she had been cheated by the “Facebook lover” and notified the police.
Based on the complaint filed by the widow, Mapusa Police on Monday booked an offence against the accused on charges of committing theft of the car and a mobile phone.
An offence under Section 380 of IPC was registered against the accused. Mapusa Police is investigating into the matter.
