The Valpoi Block Congress on Monday threatened sell fish outside the office of the Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC), if the council failed to stop the illegal sale of fish in the municipality within four days.

The block Congress members complained that there had been an increase in the illegal sale of fish since the last few days and accused the VMC of doing nothing in the matter.

On Monday, a delegation of the Valpoi Block Congress led by Block President Dasharath Mandrekar along with the Mahila Block President Roshan Desai Seva Dal President Krishna Nene, Suhas Naik and Rohidas Gaonkar submitted a petition to the VMC Chief Officer Rajesh Ajgaonkar.

Fish vendors in the VMC fish market have been complaining of poor business due to illegal sale of fish in different parts of Valpoi town and said they had been regularly complaining to VMC officials, who had not taken action in the matter.

“When the VMC collects taxes from fish vendors in the VMC market, they are responsible to resolve the grievances of these fish vendors. Due to the illegal sale of fish in Valpoi town, their business has been adversely affected and the VMC is least bothered about their problems,” said Mandrekar.

“This is our last warning and if this issue is not resolved within four days, the Valpoi Block Congress will highlight this issue by selling fish in front of the VMC office,” he added.

Later speaking to reporters, Mandrekar criticised the VMC for failing to address the grievances of genuine fish vendors.
