It may be recalled that two workers were electrocuted at a plantation in Khodye-Bhirondem on Monday morning. The incident took place when Sunita Naik (41) of Nipani-Maharashtra and Rani Naik (53) of Halkarni-Maharashtra had gone to the sugarcane plantation, owned by Krishnaprasad Gadgil. They had been employed at the plantation since the last two years.
According to Valpoi PI Shivram Vaigankar, the autopsy report has confirmed that the two workers were electrocuted. "No one has been booked in this connection and the inspection in this case has been done by the police," he added.
"We are waiting for the statement from the electricity department to explain the cause of incident," said PI Vaigankar.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were handed over to their families, after conducting autopsy.
The residents have also expressed anger for the delay in replacing the old overhead electricity lines with new cables, even after floating a tender for Rs 7.50 crore. They said if this line was replaced with cables, then the lives of two workers would have been saved.
Monday's incident has created fear among the people of Sattari taluka. Most of the overhead electricity lines are very old and some live wires have been tangled in the locality, risking lives of the people.
People from the taluka are repeatedly demanding replacement of the overhead line. A proposal in this concern was sent to higher authorities two years ago.
When contacted, Valpoi electricity department assistant engineer Ramdas Salelkar said the work of replacing overhead power lines will commence in October.
