In commemoration of the 125 years of Konkani tiatr, the Tiatr Academy of Goa named the roads in Varca and Seraulim villages after noted tiatrists and writers, Fr Freddy J Da Costa and Felicio Cardozo respectively on Saturday.
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao unveiled the two roads at Varca and Seraulim in his constituency on Saturday in the presence of TAG President Agostinho Themudo, Chairman of 125th anniversary of Tiatr Celebration Committee Tomazinho Cardozo, TAG vice-present William Fernandes, coordinator of Fr Freddy J Da Costa Memorial Trust Fausto V Da Costa, Fr Freddy’s mother Serafina and others.
Tomazinho told the media that the four roads have so far been named after tiatrists of yesteryears. Besides, the road at Varca named after Fr Freddy Da Costa and the Seraulim road after freedom fighter and writer, Felicio Cardozo, roads have also been named after tiatrists late Remmy Colaco and Jacinto Vaz, he said. “Both Fr Freddy and Felicio had made immense contribution in the field of tiatr and to take the tiatr to great heights,” Tomazinho said adding that the Tiatr Celebration Committee has decided to name as many roads as possible for the noted tiatrists.
In his address after unveiling the Fr Freddy Da Costa Road at the Varca junction, Churchill said that Fr Freddy’s contribution cannot be forgotten. “Fr Freddy will be remembered for the Konkani magazine Gulab and the construction of the Holy Cross shrine at Bambolim. He has donated his printing press to the Bishop,” Churchill said, adding that Fr Freddy is not only known in the village, but also across the State.
In his address after blessing of the plaque, Varca Church Parish Priest Fr Candido Fernandes said that Fr Freddy is one personality who had worked hard to realise his dreams. “We are all proud of Fr Freddy. His contribution to the construction of the shrine at Bambolim will be remembered,” Fr Candido said.
Dr Safira Da Costa later thanked the Tiatr Academy of Goa, the 125th anniversary of Tiatr Celebration Committee, Village Panchayat, MLA Churchill Alemao and all those who contributed to the naming of the Varca junction road after Fr Freddy Da Costa.
