After years of demanding that the Goa University (GU) reduce fees of re-evaluation, with little success, university officials have finally agreed to compromise and meet the students half way. In what will come as good news to students in all colleges across Goa, the varsity has assured students that they will refund 50% of the re-evaluation fees, if after re-evaluation, students’ marks increase by at least 20 per cent.
Representatives from the Goa University Students Council (GUSC), the body that represents students of all affiliated colleges in Goa, met the Vice Chancellor and Registrar on Friday, where the news was conveyed to the representatives.
Speaking to ‘The Goan’ later, Khemal Prabhu Shirodkar, Chairman of GUSC, explained that there was no easy solution to the deadlock between students and the GU on the matter. So finally, students had put forward the suggestion of a refund if post-revaluation marks increased. The University has decided to adopt the suggestion.
Shirodkar explained that henceforth, Rs 290 of the Rs 580 per paper paid for revaluation will be refunded if a 20 per cent increase in marks is found.
Meanwhile, university officials are reported to have told the students that BAMS (Ayurveda) interns, who used to get a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000, will now get a stipend of Rs 5000, as requested for by the students. Following the BAMS course, as is the case with MBBS, students are expected to serve a certain period of internship.
In another major decision, students of final year BSc will be given half an hour extra to answer their semester-end examinations, from the next academic year (2020-21). This is in view of the fact that the exam pattern has changed and marks have been increased to 80, from the previous 60, while the university had not increased the duration of the exam. Now, students will be
give two and a half hours.
The VC has approved the increase, and the same will be implemented from the upcoming academic year.
Meanwhile, it has been decided to increase the sports allowance to sports students from Rs 20 per day of practice to Rs 40 a day. The allowance is being revised after 10 years, Shirodkar said.
