The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has issued an order banning the sale and display of national flags made of recycled plastics, especially on days of national importance like the Republic Day, Independence Day and Liberation Day.
The council has also warned of disciplinary action for non-compliance of the order.
Fernandes said the council has already taken a decision to ban the sale and use of plastic carry bags, other materials within the municipal jurisdiction.
“It is noticed that during national importance days, there is a misuse of plastic enormously. On January 26, August 15 and December 19 and a few other occasions, we have noticed a lot of misuse of plastic flags,” said Fernandes.
“As January 26 is coming close and in order to completely ban the sale of plastic flags, the order will be implemented in toto,” he added.
“I have directed all the assistant municipal inspectors to initiate strict action against all the vendors and shopkeepers who are using, providing and selling plastic flags and carry bags within the area allotted to them and impose penalty as per law and also seize the plastic flags.”
“A copy of the order will be displayed in the conspicuous areas of the market. I want to ensure that no plastic flags are visible in the council jurisdiction,” added Fernandes.
Fernandes further said non-compliance of the order will be viewed seriously and may lead to disciplinary
action.
