Residents in Vasco have mourned the tragic demise of Francis Anthony, a Christian singer who would enthral devotees with Marathi devotional songs at the Ram Mandir in Mestawada-Vasco during the Ram Navami celebrations

Anthony (69) passed away in a road mishap in Belagavi on Saturday, when a speeding truck struck his two-wheeler near the third railway gate while returning home after picking up his granddaughter from school.

While his granddaughter escaped with minor injuries, he died on the spot. He is survived by a son, two married daughters and grandchildren.

A resident of Josh Galli, Shahapur-Belagavi but a native of Sanvordem, Anthony had worked as a Ticket Examiner in the Railways and further pursued his career in singing with great zeal post retirement.

Anthony performed at various concerts, but his most significant contribution was his annual performance of the ‘Geet Ramayan’ at the Shree Ram Temple in the Mestawada area of Vasco, a tradition he maintained for over 35 years. The ‘Geet Ramayan’ is a series of songs narrating the story of the Ramayana in Marathi.

Anthony’s rendition was a highlight of the Ram Navami celebrations, drawing audiences from across Goa.

The news of his death has left a void in the hearts of many, especially those who gathered annually at the Ram Temple to witness his performances.

Anthony’s ability to foster a sense of community and shared cultural heritage through his music made him a beloved figure in Mestawada. His passing is felt deeply by all who knew him and cherished his contributions.

In addition to his performances of the ‘Geet Ramayan’, Francis Anthony was a member of the Famous Diamond Orchestra and contributed his musical talents to the Panaji Akashwani Kendra for many years. His versatility and passion for music were evident in every endeavour he undertook.

People in Vasco have mourned the loss of Francis Anthony, who was not only a talented singer but also a much-loved member of the community.
