Vasco’s Shantinagar finally gets streetlights after four decades

Residents hope road work will follow soon

Vasco’s Shantinagar finally gets streetlights after four decades
The electricity poles have brought much-needed relief to residents.

After nearly four decades of waiting, residents of Shantinagar can now look forward to a well-lit stretch at night, with Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar facilitating the installation of streetlights in the area.

The stretch had remained poorly lit for years, causing inconvenience to residents and commuters, particularly after dark. Locals had repeatedly raised concerns over the lack of lighting, saying the darkness increased fears of robbery and other anti-social activities.

Responding to the long-standing demand, Salkar took up the issue and initiated discussions to resolve a land-related hurdle that had delayed the installation of electricity poles.

The concerned landowners cooperated, paving the way for the work to begin. As a result, 18 electricity poles have now been erected, lighting up the entire stretch and providing relief to residents.

Residents said the lighting would improve visibility, make the area safer at night and provide greater convenience to pedestrians, motorists and other commuters.

Attention has now shifted to the condition of the road. According to residents, discussions regarding road work have been completed and the way has been cleared for the next phase. Work is expected to begin soon.

Residents welcomed the development and thanked Salkar for addressing the long-pending issue, while hoping the road work will complete the facelift of the neglected stretch.
