MARGAO
Residents and vendors of the Gandhi market, Margao raised an uproar on Wednesday after the low lying market area was inundated by rain water.
Rain water also entered a couple of houses in the market area.
That’s not all. The issue of sanitation also came to haunt the civic authorities as the toilet block in the congested market is lying in a choked condition for the last couple of days.
Taking up cudgels for the vendors and residents, president of the Gandhi Market Vegetable and Readymade market Vendors Association Rajendra Ajgaonkar pointed accusing fingers at the Margao Municipal Council for the state of affairs.
Ajgaonkar minced no words when he blamed Margao Civic chief Damu Shirodkar and the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat for the failure to depute a gang of municipal workers to clean up the choked drains.
"Today, we have seen what was feared the worst in the Gandhi market. Incessant rains has flooded the market since the drains are in a choked condition”, he said.
Ajgaonkar said repeated pleas to the Margao Municipal Council to draft labourers to clean up the drains had gone abegging as a result of which the rain water inundated the market.
