The Margao Municipal Council has decided to seek the help of the Big Brother to keep at bay miscreants dumping garbage at the city’s black spots as well as traffic violators and anti-social elements.
While the MMC has invited quotations for the supply of CCTV cameras to bring the black spots under surveillance, the Civic body has requested the Information Technology department to prepare estimates for the supply of 25 CCTV cameras to rein in traffic violators and to keep criminal elements at bay.
The decision to go in for the CCTV cameras to monitor the black spots was apparently taken to put an end to waste dumping at the black spots. Though the MMC has identified over two dozen black spots across the city, the CCTV cameras will be installed at 10 locations initially, five each in Margao and Fatorda in the Municipal area. “Depending on the success of the experiment, the MMC may go in for additional cameras to cover the remaining black spots”, a senior official informed.
As far as the CCTV cameras to monitor the city is concerned, a recent meeting has constituted a committee comprising of the Police and MMC officials to take the proposal forward.
An IT official, who had attended the meeting has been requested to prepare estimates for the installation of 25 CCTV surveillance cameras at strategic locations in the city. ‘The MMC and the police had initially decided to install around 16 cameras at strategic locations. However, it has now been decided to go in for 25 CCTV cameras. The IT department has been requested to prepare the estimates”, the official informed.
