Vendors seek MLAs intervention into retail fish sale in wholesale market

MARGAO
Retail fish vendors from the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) on Wednesday complained to Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat over the rampant and unauthorised retail sale of fish in the wholesale fish market.

Led by the President of the Margao Fish Vendors Association, Felix Gonsalves, the delegation brought to the notice of the Opposition leader and the Fatorda MLA of the retail fish sale in the wholesale fish market, saying the activity has affected their business in the PDA retail market.

They pointed out that around 150-200 fish vendors are doing brisk retail business in the wholesale fish market, while fish is also sold in boxes in retail in the wholesale fish market. “This has affected our business in a big way. Customers flock to the wholesale fish market because there’s retail fish sale in the market,” Felix said, while seeking the intervention of the Margao and Fatorda MLAs.

The duo gave the fish vendors a patient hearing and advised them to bring the matter to the notice of the PDA Chairman and Member secretary, promising to pursue the matter with the PDA. Felix, however, pointed out the retail vendors had petitioned to the PDA, but in vain.

Meanwhile, Kamat assured the fish cutters operating in the SGDPA retail fish market that the PDA has sympathetically considered their demand for the waiver of fees during the Covid pandemic.
