Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday urged Goans to verify the person first before keeping them as tenants.
Responding to the demands for grants pertaining to Home, Police, Jails and Prosecution department, Sawant said, verifying tenants will help the police in detecting crime in case they are involved.
Sawant also said that landlords will be held liable if their tenants are involved in any crime and are not verified by them.
Earlier, the Opposition was critical of the government over the poor record of the police on controlling crime, dealing with people at police stations and poor record in punishing culprits.
Several MLAs, including Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao, Venzy Viegas, Vijai Sardesai and Viresh Borkar censured the Home Department, Police and Prosecution Department for what it called was a very low conviction rate despite claiming a high detection of crime rate.
The Opposition also faulted the government for reducing budgetary support for the Prosecution Department as compared to what was allocated last year.
Alemao demanded a real-time dashboard for police performance which will track patrolling done by them in kilometres, first information reports (FIRs), seizures of narcotics and have a window for citizen feedback.
Alemao also said that quarterly reports of the police’s response time, handling of complaints should be in the public domain to boost confidence in Goa Police.
He also accused the Anti-Corruption Branch of selective action and negligible disposal of complaints while demanding an online portal for e-FIRs and ‘zero FIRs’ to be filed which will generate auto-acknowledgements.
