The Verla-Canca gram sabha had to be adjourned on Sunday after only three villagers turned up for the meeting and urged the sarpanch to postpone it due to lack of quorum.
Villager Lincoln Braganza informed that the panchayat had failed to issue proper advance notice, resulting in poor attendance.
As per the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, a minimum of seven clear days’ notice must be given before holding an ordinary gram sabha meeting.
“The notice for this gram sabha was issued just four days in advance. Since this violates the Act, we requested the secretary to adjourn the meeting,” Braganza said.
However, the panchayat secretary reportedly distanced himself from the issue, claiming that the meeting was convened on the instructions of the Block Development Officer (BDO).
The Verla-Canca panchayat is headed by Sarpanch Arti Chari and Deputy Sarpanch Mohan Dhabale.
