Verna industry continues to struggle for basic infrastructure: VIA

Verna Industries Association (VIA) President Pradeep Da Costa on Wednesday said the industries at the Verna Industrial Estate continue to struggle for basic infrastructure like roads, water and power.

Speaking to reporters, Da Costa said nothing had changed despite several assurances by the government.

“Our requests have not changed over the last few years because the issues are the same. We are struggling for basic infrastructure like roads, water and electricity. These are the major issues which the government has assured to improve, but nothing has happened till date,”

said Da Costa.

He said the VIA had written to authorities explaining the situation of the power substation at Verna which caters not only to Verna Industrial estate but entire Mormugao Taluka.

“The infrastructure is around 20 years old and is operating at 80 percent efficiency. With SEZ allocation, many industries may come but where will there be power, when the infrastructure is not available and this substation is itself below standards. We were supposed to get a new transformer but nothing has happened till date,” said

Da Costa.

Da Costa said new Industries will get the land and begin construction but there will be no power supply and employment generation would be deferred again in the Catch-22 situation.
