Vijai calls for civil disobedience over ‘unequal’ sound rules

Goa Forward chief Vijai Sardesai has called for a civil disobedience movement against what he described as unequal sound pollution rules. He said local Goans should continue the movement until the law is applied equally to locals and outsiders.

The Fatorda MLA accused the government of restricting weddings and traditional events while allowing nightclubs to flout the rules. He said civil disobedience is justified when injustice is enforced. “Goa wants equality, not favouritism. There is one Goa, but two different rules on sound pollution,” Sardesai said. “Weddings and traditional events are stopped at 10 pm, while nightclubs continue without action.”

Sardesai said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had assured him in the Assembly that weddings and traditional events would be allowed till midnight. However, he said this promise has not been followed. He added that there appears to be one set of rules for Goans and another for tourists who visit nightclubs and bars along the North Goa beach belt. Reiterating his stand, the Goa Forward leader said the issue is about dignity, equality and Goa.
