A 73-year-old man was injured in a fire at his house at Marna-Siolim on Wednesday night.

The incident took place at about 9.45 pm when Fredrick D'Souza was alone and confined to a wheelchair in the house.

On noticing the fire, Rajesh Rivankar, a neighbour and caretaker of D'Souza, rushed to the house and brought D'Souza out of the house. By then, his bed had caught fire and D’Souza sustained burn injuries.

He was first moved to the Siolim Health Centre and later to the Mapusa District Hospital. He was then referred to the GMC hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

A Mapusa fire brigade rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire.

The fire is believed to have started due to a short circuit in the inverter at D'Souza's house. The inverter, TV, air conditioner, bed and other belongings were destroyed in the fire.

Anjuna Police Constable Vishal Gavas conducted the Panchnama and further investigation is in progress.
