Audi’s Q5 blends comfort, refinement and everyday usability into a well-rounded luxury SUV, proving that understated design, solid build quality and a calm drive can still stand out

AUTO | Audi Q5: Understated luxury with everyday excellence

The Audi Q5 has always played the role of the quiet achiever in India’s luxury midsize SUV segment. While rivals like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC often grab attention with sportiness or flashy tech, the Q5 focuses on balance”comfort, refinement, and everyday usability. Now firmly established on Indian roads, the Audi Q5 builds on these strengths with elegant styling, a solidly built cabin, and a smooth, confidence-inspiring drivetrain. The example we drove stood out even more thanks to its striking District Green Metallic shade”a refreshing and distinctive colour that breaks away from the usual blacks, whites, and silvers dominating the segment.

Exteriors

The Audi Q5’s design is clean, sophisticated, and unmistakably Audi. Up front, the large Singleframe grille gives it a strong road presence, flanked by sharp LED headlamps that look premium without being overstyled. Subtle creases on the bonnet and sculpted bumpers add just enough aggression to keep things interesting. In S Line trim, the Q5 looks particularly sporty, thanks to revised bumpers, larger alloy wheels, and blacked-out accents. The District Green Metallic paint deserves special mention. Close to a military green in certain light, it adds character and individuality to the Q5, making it stand out effortlessly in traffic. From the side, the SUV’s proportions feel well balanced, while the rear keeps things classy with sleek LED tail-lamps and restrained chrome detailing. It’s a design that will age gracefully.

Interiors

Inside, the Q5 impresses with its excellent build quality and understated luxury. Audi’s strength has always been cabin craftsmanship, and that tradition continues here. Soft-touch materials, aluminium trims, and tight panel gaps create a premium ambience without trying too hard. The driver gets Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster, which remains one of the best in the business for clarity and customisation. The central 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system may not be the biggest in the segment, but it is intuitive, quick, and distraction-free. Everything feels thoughtfully placed, reinforcing the Q5’s focus on usability. Comfort levels are high. The front seats are supportive and ideal for long-distance driving, while the rear seats offer generous legroom and headroom for adults. Boot space is ample and easily swallows luggage for weekend trips or airport runs, making the Q5 a genuinely practical luxury SUV.

Tech and safety

The Audi Q5 comes loaded with essential tech features, including a premium audio system, wireless charging, multiple USB ports, three-zone climate control, and connected car functionality. Rather than overwhelming occupants with gimmicks, Audi focuses on systems that work seamlessly in everyday driving. Safety is equally strong, with multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, hill-hold assist, tyre pressure monitoring, and advanced driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane assist. Whether navigating city chaos or cruising on highways, the Q5 inspires confidence behind the wheel.

Engine & drive

Powering the India-spec Audi Q5 is a 2.0-litre TFSI turbo-petrol engine producing 265hp and 370Nm of torque. Paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system, the Q5 delivers smooth, effortless performance. Acceleration is brisk without feeling aggressive, and the engine remains refined even when pushed. Ride comfort is one of the Q5’s biggest strengths. The suspension handles broken Indian roads with composure while staying stable and planted at highway speeds. It’s not a hardcore driver’s SUV, but it’s incredibly easy and relaxing to drive over long distances.

Competition

The Audi Q5 competes with the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC60 in India. The BMW appeals to keen drivers, the Mercedes leans towards luxury flair, and the Volvo prioritises safety. The Q5 sits right in the middle, offering a well-rounded mix of comfort, performance, refinement, and practicality.

Verdict

The Audi Q5 remains a strong all-rounder in the luxury SUV space. It may not be the flashiest option, but it excels where it matters most”ride comfort, refinement, build quality, and everyday usability. Add to that a standout shade like District Green Metallic, and the Q5 proves it can be both sensible and stylish. For buyers who value understated luxury and a calm driving experience, the Audi Q5 continues to be a compelling choice in India with prices starting at Rs 64.74 Lakh ex-showroom.
