The Bondvoll lake controversy flared up again on Thursday after villagers of St Cruz objected to a survey being carried out in the demarcated area around the lake at Survey No. 87/1.

Residents said they have demanded a re-survey of the entire area around the lake to clearly mark its zone of influence. They alleged that the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) had recommended nearly 50 hectares as the zone of influence, but the Goa Wetland Authority notified only 19 hectares.

Villagers questioned the reduction and accused authorities of ignoring scientific advice. They argued that limiting the notified area would open the lake’s surroundings to development, threatening its ecological balance and the bioldiversity.

Domnic Pereira, local panch and one of the agitators, said the inspection scheduled for Friday has been postponed until further notice. He cited information received from the nodal officer of the Wetland Authority.

The Bondvoll lake issue has been simmering for years, with residents opposing construction projects near the water body. They insist that the lake is vital for groundwater recharge, biodiversity, and the local environment.

The demand for a wider zone of influence stems from fears that unchecked development could damage the lake's fragile ecosystem.

The Wetland Authority has maintained that its notification was based on technical inputs and legal procedures. However, villagers continue to press for a comprehensive re-survey to ensure that the lake and its catchment are fully protected.

Thursday’s protest signals renewed tension over the future of Bondvoll lake. With the inspection now postponed, the controversy is expected to drag on, keeping the spotlight on one of Goa’s many contested ecological sites.
