An elderly man from Porvorim was duped of Rs 4.66 lakh through net banking by a person posing as a bank officer.
Ashok Bhembre, a native of Curchorem but residing at Patrakar Colony in Porvorim, filed a police complaint stating that the incident had taken place on January 31 at around 1.20 pm.
Bhembre stated that an unknown person called him claiming to be a bank officer and sent him an OTP.
The accused then gained access to his bank account and first transferred Rs 95,000 and then Rs 3.71 lakh through net banking, thereby duping Bhembre to the tune of Rs 4.66 lakh.
Acting on the complaint, Porvorim police have registered a case and further investigation is being conducted by Porvorim Police Inspector Rahul Parab.
Earlier, police had appealed to citizens, especially senior citizens, to remain cautious while dealing with unknown callers.
