Admitting it would be risky for MLAs to leave their parties and contest fresh elections, TCP Minister and Goa Forward Party (GFP) supremo Vijai Sardesai has, however, made it clear that his party would field candidates in those constituencies vacated by sitting legislators, should the need arise.
Sardesai was speaking to reporters along the sidelines of a news conference, amid growing speculations of a possible mid-term polls and talks by some MLAs regarding the possibility of an alternative government.
“Under the present situation, I don’t think any MLA would want to change his party by resigning as MLA. Given the present circumstances, there is no guarantee of winning a re-election and so, I don’t think any legislator would want to take any risk,” Sardessai said.
But should the need for fresh elections arise, Sardesai made it clear that his GFP would stake claim to those seats vacated by the sitting legislators.
“If any MLA decides to resign and contest fresh elections, it is certain that a Goa Forward candidate will contest election in that constituency,” said Sardesai.
Responding to statements by Margao MLA and former chief minister Digambar Kamat asking his party workers to be prepared for mid-term elections, Sardesai reiterated that it would not be easy for anyone and Cong MLAs would not want these elections.
“No body in Goa is ready for mid-term elections and so, there is no chance of having them. Kamat must have been told by someone that there could be mid-term polls, but at this time his party and their MLAs would not want fresh elections,” Sardesai said.
