Tension prevailed at the Curchorem police station on Tuesday after villagers from Sanvordem, who had earlier successfully protested against the bhandara project at Mirabag, marched to the police station in large numbers.
The gathering followed a complaint filed by local panch Sanjay Naik against an elderly villager, Appa Naik, who was one of the core members of the agitation against the project, alleging that he had issued threats.
After the senior citizen was summoned to the police station for inquiry, villagers, including a large number of women, accompanied him in solidarity and refused to let him face the proceedings alone.
A lengthy discussion and deliberation took place at the police station between the agitating villagers and the panchayat member. Following the interaction, Sanjay Naik expressed willingness to settle the matter amicably and informed the police that he did not wish to pursue the complaint further.
The villagers, however, alleged that the complaint was merely a pressure tactic against the activist after the cancellation of the project, claiming that the decision had adversely affected certain members of the panchayat.
