With the men in uniform failing to detect the spate of thefts reported in the village since July 14, residents of Colva along with Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas on Monday confronted Colva police station in-charge PI Vikram Naik, demanding action to keep burglars at bay.
With no answers forthcoming from the Colva PI over the thefts, the Benaulim MLA demanded to know whether the police are incompetent to resolve the thefts and mete out justice to the victims or whether the men in uniform are hand in glove with the burglars.
Residents fired a volley of questions at the Colva police station in-charge, demanding to know the reasons for police inaction and failure to resolve the cases. A victim narrated a case which had occurred last December, further saying that the Colva police are yet to register an FIR, let alone detect the case.
After coming out of the police station, the Benaulim MLA said the answers and replies given by PI Naik were not satisfactory. “I want to know whether the police are incompetent or whether they are hand in glove with the miscreants,” he demanded.
Venzy sent a message to the South Goa district Police Chief to immediately intensify patrolling in the Benaulim constituency right from Colva to Cavelossim. “If the police station has only one vehicle, the SP South should send another vehicle. I have also spoken to the Director General of Police on the spate of thefts at Colva,” he said, even as he called upon Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the Home portfolio, to put a system in place to tackle the emerging law and order situation.
