AGASSAIM
According to reports, some villagers including traditional farmers, gathered near the Goa-Velha bypass road in the morning and later marched to the work site and reportedly stopped the work, bringing the traffic along the NH17 to a halt. An Agassaim police team rushed to the spot and took control of the situation.
According to Agassaim Police, the villagers got furious after the PWD workers started the widening work without taking them into confidence, which affected their traditional farming alongside the NH17 at Agassaim.
The villagers demanded that authorities stop the work until the PWD, local farmers and Agassaim Panchayat worked out a permanent solution to the problem.
When contacted, Agassaim Sarpanch James Afonso declined to comment in the matter on grounds that he was not aware of the incident.
A local, Tony Fernandes, said the PWD had acquired the land and the government had compensated some of the affected land owners.
