Beleaguered depositors of Visionaries Cooperative Society on Tuesday took out a protest march in the commercial capital over the government’s failure to return back their hard earned deposits.
They have set a three-day deadline for the government to address their issues, failing which they have vowed to actively campaign in the ensuing polls for the defeat of the BJP MLAs.
They also blamed the Digambar Kamat government for not liquidating the society when issues first surfaced in the year 2009.
The protestors assembled near the office of the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies at the Gomant Vidya Niketan and later proceeded to the District Collectorate in a procession. Carrying black flags and placards, the protestors demanded the arrest of all the persons responsible for the state of affairs of the Society
Claiming that depositors have lost deposits to the tune of Rs 54 crore, the depositors, however, lamented that the government has not been proactive in bringing the persons to book. They also demanded that the government suspend the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies, blaming him for the present situation.
“We are giving three days' time for Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to resolve the issues of the depositors and ensure their hard earned money is returned to them immediately. If not, we will actively work for the defeat of the BJP MLAs at least in the four constituencies of Nuvem, Benaulim, Velim and Curtorim,” a depositor Myron Fernandes warned.
He demanded that the government return the amount of Rs 54 crores and arrest all the persons, including the ex-Chairperson of Visionaries Coop Society Gracy Vaz for the present situation.
Depositor Joyce Dias said the depositors have been running from pillar to post in the last two years, having called on the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at least five times and the MLA more than 25 times.
“Instead of bailing us out from the situation, arresting the persons involved and investigating the matter, they have even blamed the depositors for having invested their money in the society,” she lamented.
