Four-wheelers parked along the city roadsides for want of dedicated parking lots in the commercial capital.
MARGAO
Whether pay parking or multi-level parking lots is an answer to the acute parking issue plaguing the commercial capital is a subject matter of debate.
One thing, however, is clear that the burning parking issue surprisingly had never figured on the priority list of the authorities and the powers that be despite the fact that Margao has been the commercial capital of Goa, catering to a large volume of vehicular traffic, day and night.
A report compiled by the Traffic police show that Margao is also an educational hub, playing host to several educational institutions where more than 8,000 students are studying. The city also houses important offices such as Collectorate South, Regional Transport Office, JMFC Court, District and Session Court and other important govt. offices, bringing large number of people to the city, leaving the city roads congested.
The report stated that due to the narrow roads and lack of proper parking facility, people visiting city, park their vehicles on the road side causing obstruction to other road users.
That’s not all. The city is visited by large number of tourists since Margao Railway station being the major railway junction in the district. The report stated there’s been tremendous increase in the vehicular population, but no corresponding increase in the width of roads and allotment of parking lots.
The situation has been further aggravated with several high-rise buildings and commercial establishments coming up in the city without proper parking space for occupants as well as the visitors.
