The Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) has threatened to remove fruit stalls encroaching on roadsides in Valpoi town if the encroachments are not cleared within four days.

The VMC had spent crores of rupees to build a separate market complex for fruit, vegetable, and flower vendors. However, many fruit vendors have set up roadside stalls and have been conducting business there for several months.

VMC Chairperson Prasanna Gawas stated that the council has received a number of complaints regarding the roadside fruit stalls illegally operating by the roadsides, which has increased the risk of road mishaps due to an increase in vehicular traffic in the town. This issue was discussed during the recent council meeting, and many councillors demanded the removal of these encroachments.

“The council has taken these complaints seriously, and if these roadside encroachments are not removed in the next four days, action will be taken to confiscate the goods,” warned Gawas.

“Instructions have been given to the VMC market inspectors to take action in the matter. The market complex, constructed at a cost of crores of rupees to provide space to fruit, vegetable, and flower vendors, is not being utilised, as those who were allotted space in the market complex have illegally set up stalls by the roadsides,” said Gawas.
