The wall of a dilapidated and abandoned house at Gavsawada, Mapusa, collapsed on Saturday afternoon, damaging the adjoining house of Prasad Kerkar. The incident occurred around 12.30 pm, when the wall of the unused structure gave way and fell on the façade of Kerkar’s house, causing the verandah roof to cave in. The damage has been estimated at about Rs 50,000.

Personnel of the Mapusa Fire Department, along with Mapusa Municipal Council MC Vice Chairperson Prakash Bhivshet, visited the spot soon after the collapse. Later in the evening, Bhivashet arranged for workers to demolish the remaining part of the wall, which was in a dangerous condition. His efforts were appreciated by the Deputy Collector and the Mamlatdar.

Speaking at the site, Bhivshet informed that the municipality had demolished the upper portion of the dilapidated house last year. The Kerkar family had warned that the remaining structure was unsafe. The municipality had inspected the site and submitted a report to the Deputy District Magistrate, requesting demolition through the encroachment removal team. However, the work was delayed due to the Ganesh Chaturthi holidays, and the wall finally collapsed following incessant rains.

Bhivshet added that the damaged verandah and roof of Kerkar’s house will need repairs, and the remaining unstable wall will be demolished to prevent further accidents.
