Heavy rainfall in the Virdi region of neighbouring Maharashtra and parts of Sanquelim since Thursday night led to a sudden rise in the water level of the Walvanti River in Bicholim on Friday morning.

The river witnessed an increase of nearly four metres, creating a flood-like situation. However, prompt action by the administration ensured that the situation remained under control.

As the river level rose rapidly, the Water Resources Department (WRD) immediately activated pumping systems to prevent water from entering the Sanquelim market through the drainage network.

Although water entered a few low-lying areas, causing temporary inconvenience to residents, timely intervention helped avert any major flooding.

The Bicholim Emergency Control Room kept all departments on high alert throughout the taluka. Officials from the Fire and Emergency Services, Water Resources Department, and other agencies continuously monitored the situation.

Minor incidents of fallen trees and road blockages were reported from different parts of the taluka, and Fire Service personnel promptly cleared the obstructions to restore normal traffic.

According to officials of WRD, water level in the Shahapur–Anandi river stretch also rose by nearly four metres. As the intensity of rainfall reduced by evening, the river level gradually began to recede.

No major flooding was reported from Bicholim, Asnora, or surrounding areas, though some low-lying localities and agricultural fields experienced waterlogging.

Officials also noted that satisfactory rainfall in the dam catchment area would help improve reservoir storage levels.

The administration has appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary movement near rivers and flood-prone areas while continuing to monitor the situation closely.
